I’ve been a long-time fan of Kiehls “Marvelous Mineral” Mascara ($16.50 @ Nordstrom, Kiehls.com, etc.). Basically I bought it when it first came out a year or two ago and have been using it ever since. I love it. Now let me give a brief description of my lashes, because I hate it when people review mascaras without any details on their own lashes! It’s like, uhh what works on Meg’s amazon Indian lashes is not necessarily going to work on me!
SO, on to my lashes. I have pretty abundant, medium length lashes but they’re very fine (I’m Chinese fyi, if that helps you picture my lashes at all) so without mascara they really don’t stand out very much. However, I urge other Asian girls out there to NOT give up on their lashes, because while our lashes might not be super long they tend to be abundant and with some good mascara they are definitely an asset!
The first mistake I think a lot of Asian girls make is to go for length (which most Asian girls don’t have). This means loads of lengthening mascara and even (gulp) false eyelashes. Now I’m not going to get into the false eye lashes now, though I do have a friend who is a pro at making them look natural so maybe sometime we’ll do a post on that. Let’s just focus on mascara.
The thing is, Asians, we don’t have long lashes … and we don’t usually look good with long lashes! Our eyes are (usually) not very sunken in and to have long lashes doesn’t look good most of the time! Instead, I’d choose a mascara that emphasizes the natural abundance of Asian eyelashes. You might not think you have a lot of lashes, but I swear the majority of Asian girls have more lashes than they think.
Cue my beloved Kiehls mascara. This stuff doesn’t cake on, but it does give a natural looking thickness and a little bit of length (just for kicks). I do a few swipes on each eye every morning and I’m good to go. I’ve converted loads of Asian friends to this stuff because it looks good on Asian girls!
Now let’s discuss Lancome’s “Hypnose Drama” Mascara ($24.50, Nordstrom & most other department stores). I very recently got this mascara as a gift from my mom (she likes to shop duty free through Sky Mall every time she flies). I’d heard lots about Hypnose so I immediately gave it a try. It’s great. It really really is. And I’m picky about mascara. I used to use Dior Show Blackout, but that stuff tended to clump on me and was really thick (which is kind of perfect for the vampy look and I still use it to those ends occasionally) which is not my every day ideal. Hypnose is great, my lashes looked naturally good! I would say it looks even more natural than my Kiehls mascara! So now the two are dueling it out in my makeup bag. Since I get up obscenely early for my internship it’s really just whichever tube my hand touches first, but maybe once school kicks in I’ll make a final decision! ( I could film it too guys! and post it! The Decision: Danqing’s Mascara 2010. Haha OK, I’ll stop making Lebron jokes now).
But really, next time you’re at a department store give these two a try. I know ya’ll want long, lucious lashes but I say work with what you got and make that look great!
