I LOVE natural beauty products. I am a firm believer in the benefits of limiting your skin’s exposure to chemicals, and am always looking for new ways to green-up my beauty routine. Enter a Whole Foods treasure: beet root juice.
Where do you find it? In natural/organic red food coloring. Packs of three (blue, yellow, red) are sold at most Whole Foods stores, near the spices section. The little bottle contains only beet root juice and citric acid as a preservative (citric acid = found in lemons). Use it in baking…
…Or on your lips!
NATURAL LIPGLOSS RECIPE
Beet root juice (available at Whole Foods)
Vitamin E gel (available at Rite Aid, other pharmacies or health stores)
Vaseline petroleum jelly (optional)
Step One: Find a small container used for beauty products (i.e. the tiny sample jars they distribute at Lush; I personally love my La Mer Creme de la Mer sample jar), clean it out, dry it VERY thoroughly.
Step Two: Pour a few drops of the Vitamin E gel into the container. Vitamin E happens to be both a preservative and a great treatment for chapped, cracked lips. If you can’t find it bottled in gel form, poke a few Vitamin E capsules with a needle and squeeze their gel out!
Step Three: Add the beet root juice at your discretion- I recommend adding a drop at a time and stirring the mixture with a clean toothpick.
Step Four: Add Vaseline to achieve the desired consistency and dilution. Stir again with toothpick.
There you have it: a freshly made, inexpensive lip gloss that looks a beautiful berry-red shade alone and divinely juicy over a peachy lipstick (REC: LORAC It Girl), as well as a fantastic overnight lip treatment!
If you’re not a fan of Vaseline, skip it. I happen to like it for the way it thickens the gloss. Do not keep the gloss for too long, or the beet root juice may begin to develop a musky scent.
Three ingredients, and you’re on your way to a gorgeous pout.
(P.S. Want a beauty use for real beet root? Leggy Bollywood diva Shilpa Shetty swears by sticking it in the microwave for a few seconds and rubbing it on her cheeks before events for a natural and healthy glow.)
