Nobody likes to have ashy, dry hands or skin that looks like graying prunes. They say you can tell a lady by her hands– or at least, Rhett Butler can! Here are my tips for soft, beautiful hands:
1. Wear gloves when washing dishes
If you want to preserve the skin on your hands, don’t put them in contact with harsh dishwashing detergents and scalding water. Wear rubber gloves when you’re cleaning up the dishes- AND when you’re washing anything else (i.e. bathrooms, counters, floors)!
This is probably the no.1 skin destroyer for your hands! I’m always shocked by ladies who don’t wear gloves… then I look at their hands… and sigh sadly…
2. Wear mittens in the winter
Exposing your skin to harsh weather conditions can cause redness, chapping, and skin peeling. Cover up with a thick pair of mittens or gloves.
3. Use a moisturizing hand soap
I love the hand soaps from Bath and Body Works for hands that are soft and fragrant. I’ve found that generic brand soaps (like the ones found in school or office bathrooms) and even popular brands like Softsoap can be too harsh on skin.
4. Avoid over-usage of harsh chemicals
Try not to spend too much time dousing your fingers in strong nail polish remover or other nasty chemicals. If you’re doing work on your nails, keep it localized to minimize damage to the surrounding skin.
5. Pamper and exfoliate your skin
Simple, inexpensive ingredients from your kitchen can give your hands a revitalizing lift! Massage olive oil onto clean hands and keep on for a while to experience great moisturizing benefits. When you’re using fresh lemons, rub the lemon halves into your knuckles to exfoliate and soften them. Some folks like to use baking soda mixed with water to exfoliate their skin as well. And when you’re baking, steal a little extra butter to massage into your cuticles!
6. Use a hand cream
Don’t bother with fancy, fragranced, or overpriced hand creams. The one and only hand cream a belle needs to have for the softest hands in the county is Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. This absurdly, incredibly effective hand moisturizer needs only a small drop to turn your skin from elephant hide to baby cheeks in a matter of seconds!
I apply the Neutrogena Hand Cream every night before sleeping and wake up to super-soft hands. If you wash your hands regularly throughout the day, pop this little tube in your purse and reapply after washing!
Supermodel Tyra Banks likes to use Vaseline petroleum jelly for her dry skin needs. If you don’t have time to run to the store to get Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula Hand Cream, try using your tub of Vaseline to produce similar results! She also shared another beauty secret of her’s for soft feet: slap on some Vaseline, pull on a pair of thick socks, catch some rest, and enjoy silky feet the next morning!
