OK, so this might seem like a “duh, that’s a no-brainer” kind of thing but I have to say it: LOTION! Lotion, Lotion, Lotion! Always lotion. Lotion your whole body. There’s nothing uglier than ashy, dry skin. Lotion keeps your skin moisturized and healthy-looking. Having lived in Michigan for much of my life, I know a thing or two about lotion. Without it I would have turned into a reptile during the long, cold, dry Michigan winters. So, here are a few suggestions!
We’re only going to look at drug store brands, because, quite honestly I have never purchased a fancy body lotion in my life. I’ve never needed to! So, while I’m sure there are lovely expensive lotions out there, I’d suggest saving some money and trying one of these great products.
This is my absolute favorite body lotion. It’ll keep your skin soft and smooth in a blizzard. In the winter I wish I could just step into a huge vat of this stuff. An added bonus is that it smells great – sweet and warm. If you’re looking at your skin and thinking “damn, I need to lotion”, then go to the drug store, buy this stuff, and slather it on after your next shower. You won’t regret it.
I know a lot of people don’t like fragrance. If that’s you, this is your lotion. Not quite as thick as the Jergens, this Eucerin will get the job done. and keep you scent-free.
This is the only product here that I haven’t personally used, but one of my friends uses this stuff for everything, face and body. And she has, hands down, the most beautiful skin I’ve ever seen. She lives by this stuff. Now I’m not advertising it as a miracle cream, just passing along this information. I swear she has the most radiant skin I’ve ever seen.
Good Ol’ Vaseline. Put it on your lips as a lip balm, put it on dry patches of skin, Vaseline is an old moisturizing favorite. Everyone should have a tub of this stuff around for good measure.
This stuff is Vaseline on crack. I love it. I slather it on my lips at night before I go to bed and I wake up with wonderfully moisturized lips. I have a tube in nearly every bag I own. You can get little mini tubes in packs of two at places like Target or Walmart. I also put this stuff on any dry patches of skin I might encounter. This stuff is immensely popular, a favorite of many celebrities like Lucy Liu.
For all of you out there that want a no-fuss approach to lip care, look no further than Chapstick brand’s natural lip balm. It comes in a handy little tube, it’s great for your lips, it’s all natural, and it’s only like 3 bucks!
Now I know I said no luxury products, but you can get a mini tin of this for $10. That’s a pretty reasonable price for 100% pure organic shea butter. And, according to Meg, the little mini tin lasts forever. You can put it on your lips or smear it on some dry skin. Warm it between your hands if you find it a bit hard to get out of the tin.
I hope this was helpful! Don’t waste your money on expensive lotions or, even worse, foofy, over-scented lotions from stores like The Body Shop or Bath and Body works. They’re making perfumes rather than quality lotions.
And remember, always put your lotion on after a shower. Lotion moisturizes in two ways, first by giving your skin moisture, and second by trapping existing moisture on your skin. By applying lotion right after a shower traps the most moisture on your skin.
