SONAM’S DIET, EXERCISE AND SKINCARE
Sonam made news for her incredible weight loss prior to joining the film industry. She spoke with Prevention Magazineabout her diet program: “In all fairness, it was my mother who helped me get rid of my excess weight. The first thing she did was to keep me off the stuff I was so fond of chocolates, ice creams, fried foods and sweets.
“In addition, [I was put on] six small meals a day that are low on carbs and high on protein. My breakfast consisted of oatmeal and fruits. Post-workout, I had brown bread with egg whites. Afterwards, it was a protein shake with juice. Lunch comprised dal, sabzi, one ragi roti, salad and a piece of chicken or fish. The evening snack was high-fibre crackers with chicken cold cuts or egg whites. At dinner, it was soup, salad and a piece of chicken or fish. I followed this routine for a year and lost 35 kilos in all!”
For a fresh start every morning, Sonam was taught by her grandmother to sip on warm water and follow that up with honey and lime water to flush out all the toxins. To stay hydrated she sips coconut water, buttermilk, or cucumber juice.
On her exercise routines, Sonam says: “I feel cardiovascular exercises work best for me in combination with weight training. Each day of the week I focus on a particular body part, such as the abdomen, arms, shoulders or waist. I do 30 minutes of cardio every day. Two days a week I follow it up with dance exercises learnt from Ashley Lobo. On other days I practise Bharat Thakur’s Power Yoga. In summer, I like to swim as much as I can. I try to do different workouts and balance them out in order to keep my motivation high; plus mixing exercises helps burn more calories.”
As for her skincare routine, Sonam revealed to the Afternoon Dispatch/Courier that she always wears a sunscreen above SPF30, rain or shine. She prefers to avoid heavy skincare products with lots of ingredients. Says Sonam: “Since childhood my mother has restricted me from using chemical products. I used milk as an astringent and sometimes besan and curd [yogurt]. When you are young you should treat [your skin] gently.”
More so than other Bollywood heroines, Sonam loves to lavish herself with the highest-quality expensive skincare and luxury fragrance products, but also she’ll mix it up with some affordable drugstore buys. Sonam told STAR TV’s Indya.com that her purse always carries a Neutrogena sunscreen, a MAC lip balm, La Mer’s Creme de la Mer face cream, Chanel and MAC cheek tints, and vitamins.
SONAM’S DAILY LOOK
To get Sonam’s sweet and cool daily makeup look, prep skin with moisturizer and sunscreen. Follow with concealer where needed and a powder foundation. Take a smudgy black eye pencil and dot around the upper and lower lashline, then smudge to form a small wing near the lower lashline and blend to softness. Darken brows with a dark brown eyeshadow if necesssary. Curl lashes and apply mascara. Finish the look with a muted pink or brown-pink lipstick. Don’t forget to paint your nails a trendy color!
SONAM’S MAKEUP ROUTINE
Sonam can be a tricky girl to pin down because, true to her fashion-conscious style, she is always switching up her makeup looks. In terms of modelling abilities, Sonam is easily the most versatile of all her Bollywood peers; she’s a chameleon who takes both hair and makeup styling with ease and can transform herself with any look!
There are three basic trends to follow when applying makeup to look like Sonam Kapoor.
Uh-oh, Sonam, we’re on to you! Like all of us, Sonam has a weakness for her favorite lipstick: her yellow-based matte red! She’ll pair this lippie with formal outfits at press events and will use it to spice up nights out on the town. To emulate, try MAC Lipstick in Ladybug.
2) Wear neutral pink-brown lipcolors
On the days she wants her cute and funky hairstyles to shine, Sonam will keep her lips toned down with a brown-pink lipstick or lipgloss. This shade is a staple for all Bollywood actresses as a “my lips but better” color that gives polish to any look without fuss. To mimic, try MAC Lipstick in Twig.
Whether it’s in her films, at parties, or publicity events, Sonam loves to rock a smudgy dark smoky eye. This is not for the faint of heart! Use a black eye pencil (MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder) paired with a matte black eye shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon) to recreate this look. Don’t forget to prep your undereyes well with concealer and powder before applying!
SONAM’S HAIR STYLES
To take care of her beautiful hair, Sonam makes oil massages a priority. She attributes the secret of her long, glorious mane of hair to her mom: “You can see my hair is so long but it’s all because of my mother who used to oil my hair when I was a kid… Oil it especially during winter,” she advises. Sonam brushes her hair with a hairbrush from Conair and uses Kerastase hair products.
As it is with her makeup and clothes, Sonam keeps us guessing with her hairstyles. Braid it, scrunch it, curl it, slick it up in a ponytail, straighten it… just remember to have fun and keep changing it up! Sonam tends to keep her healthy hair its natural black color or else will dye it dark brown with some medium brown natural-looking highlights.
