I am so proud and excited to present our very own Jolie Asie exclusive fashion and style interview with the very lovely Teena Ahuja Kapoor, Bollywood celebrity stylist, Mumbai-based image consultant, and Priyanka Chopra’s former personal stylist.
Without further ado!
Meg: Tell us about your average work-day: what do you do, who do you meet, where do you go?
Teena: I am a freelance stylist so my days vary drastically…. but an average day involves a lot of emails and phone calls to designers, productions houses and celebrity teams. As the shoot/ appearances get closer that’s where the madness begins from sourcing to fittings and finally the shoot. Some days I walk into a lot of local stores and markets to keep an eye on the latest trends and pick up accessories.
You were Priyanka Chopra’s personal stylist and gave her gorgeous outfits. Where did you buy those amazing clothes? And are there any less expensive brands you recommend for PC’s fans who want to dress like her?
Teena: I could go on and on with this one. Firstly, I must say that Priyanka Chopra has an amazing eye for beautiful things herself. There have been a number of occasions where she has been spotted wearing clothes from her personal wardrobe – from being in a Dolce and Gabbana dress to a Shahab Durazi outfit or Abercrombie and Fitch track pants (like you mentioned in your blog). On other occasions, clothes/accessories have been bought or sourced from a host of designers which could be from one of our most well-known Indian or International brand or even a high street one.
Style is not about spending big bucks. Its about picking the right piece. There are a lot of high street brands available worldwide nowadays. Brands like Mango, Zara, Forever 21 and the likes are the best place to get a lot of stylish clothes for less. Also every city has great street shopping too, their local markets, its just about being patient and finding the right things there too.
What was it like working closely with Priyanka Chopra and other celebs?
Teena: I have worked the longest with Priyanka Chopra on a very close level. She is the most patient, intelligent and mature person for her age. For the 15 months I styled her there was not one time that the team was led to believe that we are at work. There was always a calm and fun vibe being around her. PC as we called her, was very open to new ideas and not the one to play by the rules (in a good way). She loves interacting with the entire team and getting everyone’s view. That’s the reason she loves being in touch with her fans throughout the world via twitter or her website www.iampriyankachopra.com.
What are your future goals and ambitions as a stylist and image consultant?
Teena: I go with the flow. I do not like stressing over the future. What’s the point right??? And anyway it all depends on how one molds it. As of now I am very content with the way my work is. Sometimes, I’m at a shoot and other times promoting a luxury brand. I reckon if all goes smooth then thats how it shall be in the future too.
What’s your go-to outfit for an evening out?
Teena: Oh this is an easy one. I am a hardcore jean person. A pair of dark blue skinny jeans with a black fitted shirt or if I gotta be more formal then an LBD (little black dress) and a statement piece of jewelry.
What do you think is the biggest fashion mistake most Indian women make, and how can they fix it?
Teena: Not knowing their body type. There are a lot of women I see/ know who spend all the money in the world and still don’t look good. They need to realize that ‘less is more’ ! Find out what your best and thinnest part of your body is and work around that.
Keeping it classy with one or maximum two loud things in your look is what you should go for. Having your bag, shoes, clothes, neckpiece, rings, bracelets, earrings all screaming out for attention is not the way anyone should go. Just saying all that out loud gave me a headache (haha) so imagine seeing all of it on one person. That’s a big NO-NO!
What’s your number one style tip for women who are petite (short or small)?
Teena: HIGH HEELS!!!!! And not wearing skirts that are mid-length. It’s all about creating the illusion of longer legs and that can be done two ways. One by wearing short skirts/shorts with high heels (ofcourse) and the other by wearing a maxi dress (again with high heels- of course :)) Wearing a piece that is half way down your thigh or upto the knee cuts short your legs and will make you look shorter.
Who are your fashion inspirations and muses?
Teena: Really! C’mon this is just an unfair question! There are like a million of them! But I’m still gonna try -it could be someone like a Victoria Beckham’s classic but hot look, a Tarun Tahiliani’s timeless yet elegant Sari or even a kid on the street wearing something funky! I’m just open to it all!
If you could be a stylist for any one person in the world, who would it be?
Teena: Okay! I’m gonna give you one each bollywood and hollywood. Sridevi ( my all time fav.) and Jennifer Lopez!!!!
Our readers are regular girls with regular budgets. Do you have any tips for them to save money and still look glam?
Teena: Yeah of course! Pick items that are solid colors. In that case you can mix and match them up with a host of things in your wardrobe, For instance, you own a white shirt- you can wear it with a short denim skirt to give it an edgy look, a short flare skirt to give it a flirty look, pair of well fitted jeans for your classic chic look, a knee length fitted skirt for a more formal look, fun denim or bright colored shorts to give it a funky day look, throw on a blazer and get you serious work look an so on. See what I mean! Go for the solids and invest more in fun. playful accessories like shoes, bags, jewelry etc. coz then you can mix and match them in hundreds of different ways and have that many more looks!
