Want to learn how to look like Asian film actress and star Gong Li? Here is your comprehensive how-to guide on Gong Li’s beauty secrets, makeup mantras, and hair styling tips.

Gong Li is a Chinese actress famed for her work in Singaporean films. She has won numerous awards in performance and was voted China’s most beautiful person in a popular Beijing News poll in 2006. Westerners recognize Gong Li for her mesmerising performance as Hatsumomo in “Memoirs of a Geisha“, as well as her work in the 2000’s films “Miami Vice” and “Hannibal Rising”.

Gong is very tight-lipped about her beauty regimen, revealing little to her fans about her beauty secrets and makeup bag. She does give great lifestyle advice, however, that is crucial to looking beautiful and feeling your best. Says Gong in a News.163.com interview:

“When asked to reveal the secrets of her beauty regimen, Gong Li answered that in addition to using skin care products, she feels that a positive attitude about life is also particularly important for one’s beauty. If one is worried all day and frowns a lot, even the best skin care products cannot bring good results.”

I can’t emphasize how true this is! Keep mindful of any tension you are holding in your face throughout the day. Do you purse your lips or frown while studying or working? Is your chin wrinkling up when you are thinking? When you are trying to fall asleep, are you trying so hard that you are grimacing without knowing it? Try your best to always keep your face relaxed. It takes more muscles to frown than to smile!

Gong has revealed that her most important beauty secret is to get an adequate amount of sleep at night (she sometimes sleeps up to ten hours!) As she said in a Movies Online interview:

“Especially for Chinese women, it’s very important to get a good night sleep; with Chinese men, it’s a little different. With Chinese men, they need to eat – if you let a Chinese man go hungry, if he doesn’t eat enough – we call this ‘Men eat, women sleep.’ If a man goes hungry, he stays dry and weak, and it’s horrible. The same thing happens with women if they don’t get enough sleep, their skin starts sagging and nothing looks good. So it’s very important for that…. I’m lucky, I get enough sleep, it’s very important.”

Gong Li recommends going to bed without stress, pressure or any tension on your mind; feeling relaxed and avoiding anger, she says, are the best ways of looking and feeling gorgeous.

Gong Li loves to wow her audiences and her fans with her stunning figure, which she takes pride in taking diligent care of. Says Gong to Channel News Asia: “You have to exercise, that is still very important. You might need to be more proactive towards exercise and [watch] your diet.”

Regarding her diet, Gong Li prefers to cook and eat traditional foods of Northern China, but makes an effort to avoid eating too many “bread and cereal products like noodles and rice and starch, carbohydrates, those kind of things.” She also avoids eating too many sweets, as sugar is harmful to both skin and your weight.

To keep her body “clean and healthy”, Gong Li told Movies Online that she likes to eat fruits and vegetables and drink green tea. If you are interested in tea drinking for beauty benefits, be sure to check out our post about white tea, green tea’s healthier cousin, or non-caffeinated Pu’er tea.

There are four basic rules to follow when applying makeup to look like Gong Li.

1) Mattify your skin

Gong’s skin is beautiful and smooth, and her matte makeup sets this off to perfection. Matte skin is flattering on women who have long planes to their face or high cheekbones, because it allows light to hit their faces in a way that emphasizes the smoothness of their skin, as well as their refined bone structure. To get matte skin like Gong, apply a translucent or sheer powder over your foundation (try La Mer The Powder).

2) Wear pale pink lipsticks and glosses

Gong Li looks lovely in pale pink lipsticks and lipglosses; they allow her even skintone to shine and draw attention to her eye makeup, which she likes to play up. To emulate Gong’s pink lips, try lip products like NARS Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight or MAC Lipstick in Angel.

3) Dress up your evening look with winged eyeshadow and bronzer

For press events, Gong Li will often show up sporting winged eyeshadow. To get this look, enlist the help of a smoky eye eyeshadow palette like Dior’s 5-Colour Designer All-In-One Artistry Palette in Smoky Design. Eyeshadow palettes come with useful instructions on how to use the palette to get a gorgeous smoky eye. Wing your dark shadow out half an inch from the edges of your eye in a straight line. Be sure to apply a brow highlighter in a light color (white, silver, or champagne). Finish the look with bronzer applied to your cheekbones.

4) Contour your upper eyelid area

Gong Li likes to use neutral eyeshadows to contour her upper eyelid area. Above the outer half of your eye, apply a light brown or taupe eye shadow and blend outwards towards the eyebrow, finishing below the arch. Above the inner half of your eye, do the same but start higher, creating a light patch above the inner corners and near the nose. Finish with a highlighting eye shadow in a lighter color directly under the arch of the eyebrow. When done correctly, this look can give the appearance of larger and wider-set eyes.

As you may witness in the photos above, Gong Li loves to sweep her hair back, away from her face. She wears it styled up frequently in messy buns and loose twists, or else slicked back straight with gel. Generally, she likes to have texture in her hair; to emulate, use a wave-creating spray like Bumble and bumble Surf Spray or simply a regular hair spray. Run your hands through your hair, pushing all sides towards the back in order to discourage a part from forming.

Gong keeps her hair in its natural black color or else colors it a rich, dark brown.
